hanging on her every word talking now about what drivers barack obama, one of her largest -- drives barack obama, one of her largest applause line saying being president doesn't change who you are, is reveals who you are, this on what feels more like a closing night unanimous an opening night. >> 40 -- than an opening night. >> the convention of the democratic national party will now come to order. >> reporter: first lady michelle obama takes the primetime spot plight on opening night, but ahead of her speech several prominent democrats are firing up the crowd. >> being asked to pay your fair share isn't class warfare. it's patriotism. >> mitt romney says we should take his word that he paid his fair share. his word? s word? his word? trust comes from transparency and mitt romney comes up short on both. >> reporter: democrats adopted a party platform that calls for

higher taxes on the wealthy while backing same sex marriage and abortion right. earlier vice president joe bide -- rights. earlier vice president joe biden and his wife jill arrived in the tar heel state. mr. biden will accept the party nomination for second term on thursday. president obama wrapped up his trip through swing states before heading to charlotte tomorrow. >> we've come too far to go back now. if you're willing to vote for me, we'll win norfolk again, we'll win virginia again, we'll win this election. we will finish what we started. >> reporter: president obama told that virginia crowd he'll be watching this very speech at home at the white house tonight. we assume he is doing that. first lady michelle obama absolutely essential to the president's reelection. earlier tonight just before the first lady was on the stage we heard from san antonio mayor julian castro to deliver the

keynote tonight. let's take a deeper look noat some of this, fox 5's tom fitzgerald up. michelle obama four years ago, the country didn't know her. she had to done accusations about her patriotism. how different this time around four years later after being first lady? >> starkly different. earlier we spoke with the deputy campaign manager for the obama campaign and she agrees with that point. she says look, back in 2008 michelle obama was an attorney, a mother, a blank slate to many americans and it was barack obama who soaked up most of the good press out there. this time it's much different. michelle obama comes into the race with popularity that is viewed by the obama campaign itself as their not so secret weapon. tonight you're seeing a lot of that on display as the first lady in essence trying to vouch for this president spending some of her own political capital on the president. listen to this. >> back when we have first came together four years ago, i still had some concerns about this journey we'd begun.

while i believed deeply in my husband's vision for this country and i was certain he would make an extraordinary president, like any mother i was worried about what it would mean for our girls if he got that chance. >> let's talk about the keynote address tonight, julian castro gave what many are comparing to state senator barack obama's 2004 keynote address. who is this guy? what's his job tonight? >> simply put, brian, this represents the next generation of the democratic party and by all accounts this was a tour de force. mayor castro represents this next generation as a lot of its old leaders have kind of passed aside of last week the reps put their own out featuring the florida senator marco rubio, but tonight mayor castro riveted that crowd in charlotte in a speech talking about his own immigrant roots, his mother and grandmother's struggles to put he and his twin brother through school. that story was really the underpinning of the point of

his speech. the democrats view mitt romney and the republicans are engaging in their own version of class warfare through their own economic policies. >> what we don't accept is the idea that some folks won't even get a chance and the thing is mitt romney and the republican party are perfectly comfortable with that america. in fact, that's exactly what they're promising us. >> now michelle obama, the first lady of the united states, has just wrapped up her speech. it's a big night tomorrow. you see the crowd reacting. there's some of the dignitaries in the audience right now. the big night tomorrow is going to be highlighted by the acceptance speech of vice president joe biden and also the stalwart of any democratic convention in modern recent history former president bill clinton will address the crowd, also. there's a lot more of this convention still ahead. republican presidential nominee mitt romney stayed off the campaign trail today while

his vp nominee paul ryan campaigned in iowa. his message centered on that single question asking voters are you better off than you were four years ago? romney is in vermont preparing for the three debates scheduled with president obama. the news edge on virginia, a memorial held in manassas this evening to remember two people killed in a horrific drunk driving accident back in 2009. the loss from that day still haunts family members. fox 5's will thomas has more. >> reporter: while this is the manassas intersection where a grandmother and her toddler grandson lost their lives, university boulevard at prince william parkway. three years since that accident some of the survivors as well as family and friends have come together to say good-bye to those they lost. >> today would have been my son's first day in kindergarten which i looked so forward to. he had a backpack ready to go to school and i miss the

backpack. i can't dream. all my dreams have been stolen from me. >> reporter: she lost her 2- year-old son and 60-year-old mother in an instant. rebecca sacra and jonathan ortiz died september 4th, 2009, when this man left a nearby jimmy buffett concert and drove drunk. his blood alcohol content was nearly double the legal limit. susie delgado was driving the car that was hit. >> oh, my mom loved him so much and he called her grandmala for grandmother and she just absolutely loved that. >> reporter: on this third anniversary those who loved the victims are vowing not to let anyone forget what happened. ne >> all i ask of my family and friends is please not to drink and drive. >> reporter: she also lost her mother in the crash and her son just 12 at the time was seriously hurt. like so many others here, he

wants drunk drivers to really pay for their actions. william john mallory was convicted but got out of prison this past march. >> he got 2 1/2 years for a sentence that was 20 years that. makes no sentence at all, but truthfully i believe got will get him back. >> reporter: they know they can't bring their loved ones back, but they hope their effort sends a message to judges and lawmakers. the local chapter of madd, mothers against drunk driving, placed the photos of local victims of drunk driving accidents out here. just like the family members we heard from, they're trying to send a message they want tougher penalties, the point being if you risk the lives of others by drinking and driving, you risk your own life including your freedom. i'm will thomas in manassas, now back to you. the edge on d.c., another attack as the capitol hill neighborhood is on en, a man robbed and beaten early -- edge, a man robbed and beaten early this morning. the victim called police and is

recovering. it happened just blocks from a brutal assault last month in eastern market there. have been no arrests in the beating of t.c. maslin who is still in the hospital. police say there's no obvious connection to the two assaults, but both investigations remain open. a park hit by vandals over the weekend. laura evans is everywhere at 11:00. >> american flags were ripped, a park bench destroyed, a bush set on fire and police say that was just part of the damage. this happened in marble township, pennsylvania. police arrested several teens who had been drinking. a figure skating coach who competed at the 1988 olympics for the soviet union is being held in maryland tonight. police say denrich potenski is a fugitive from charges in new york, although they won't release the details. he and his ice dancing partner placed fourth at the olympic games in calgary. a mural of a nude woman turning heads in atlanta tonight. it was painted on a wall by an artist from spain showing a woman in various stages of

it off the roadways, thousands in alabama lost power during the storm. the local mayor there expects electricity to be restored by the end of the week. a lot of frustrations. talked to some people down in new orleans today, said that they're frustrated, city is struggling again, even a minor storm relatively speaking. >> 20 inches of rain. >> power is out. >> it's had a big impact elsewhere it's still going to rain up and down the east coast. some of that is leftover isaac rain. they might have to retire thai storm due to the damage it caused. tonight we have a very muggy air mass. we'll describe it tropical and when it's that humid, any storms that form are able to pull a ton of that humidity and rain it out on the area. so tomorrow we'll be watching for some heavy downpours, a few which of could cause localized flash flooding. so we'll continue to watch that with radar. you can do that with your fox 5 weather appear. humid with scattered downpours,

the -- app. humid with scattered downpours is the big headline tomorrow. it will probably be wetter tomorrow than today, 87 degrees. thursday should be drier but hotter. often we get some of our best weather in early september. we'll have to put it on hold because these are real hot augustlike days complete with those heavy downpours. tonight not much showing up on radar. they continue to monitor heavy storms through pennsylvania and flash flood warnings are flying there as well as for northern delaware and a section of new jersey. we don't have any flash flood warnings but we have a couple things showing up very spotty in nature beginning to move up from the south. we'll keep a spotty shower in the forecast overnight. there could be more coming up from the south going through the overnight hours. we'll watch that radar for you closely. we have another heavy line coming through pennsylvania, good batch coming into new york city and we can follow this down to the gulf coast and some of the remnants of what was isaac, it's kind of split into two. we have some of it up over the

mid-atlantic into the great lakes and we have this feature singing south. it's starting to rain on -- sinking south. it's starting to rain on some of the same areas that got rained on 10 days ago from the same system. the hurricane center is watching this to see if it might try to develop into something once it gets into the gulf of mexico. we have tropical storm leslie that will probably skim by bermuda later in the week, might give a glancing blow to the canadian player times and beyond that one -- maritimes and beyond that one we have tropical storm michael. it should move due to the north and should not cause any problems. we've had three named storms since isaac developed. today 89 degrees. we'll have another warm one tomorrow, our temperatures loving at 82 degrees. it's real hard to cool off -- hovering at 82 degrees. it's real hard to cool off on nights like this. maybe an isolated storm, 74 degrees, a warm muggy start in

the morning. we'll have clouds and sun like today but more afternoon showers, a few more than today, best chance south and also east of d.c. i think that's where the best action will be, our temperature about 87 degrees. pack an umbrella just in case. at 8 a.m., spotty showers, 76 degrees, by noon 83 and by 5:00 86 degrees with showers and storms. here's your fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast and yes, we've definitely got some warm days, especially until friday. then we've got another storm system we'll monitor saturday into sunday and monday that cools our temperatures off but still brings us a chance for showers and storms. so it's a little bit unsettled. probably the dryest day this week will be thursday. as we head into early next week we'll be right around 80 degrees with a couple showers and storms in the forecast. that's it for your seven-day forecast. we're very excited about what's going on at nats park. here's lindsay murphy's report. this is the verizon 4g lte sports desk with lindsay murphy.

mike shanahan is the one man who knows who his starting running back is. i say that because the players themself at least as of monday had not been told and we are five days away from the season opener in new orleans. the release of tim hightower leaves three running backs on

the water with little experience, one of them evan royster currently list ad top the depth chart -- listed atop the depth chart competing with roy helu. the starter has yet to be named. is evan okay with that? >> i think it's good as a whole because i think it makes us all compete and it's not like one of us is going in the game to play starter. we're all here competing and working to get that spot. >> we're still young ourselves. we had to mature quickly and i think our coach is doing a good job of keeping us comfortable and making sure we're not too far out of our comfort zone going in the game. 4th round of the u.s. open andy roddick who will retire after this tournament facing the 2009 champ juan del potro. 1st set roddick serving in the near court. del potro comes to net and roddick responds with a
